Residences in Peitian

Peitian Residences

Peitian Residences refer to the ancient residences of Ming and Qing Dynasties located in Liancheng County in mountainous areas of the west Fujian. With 800 years of history, this ancient village has comparatively complete reservation of ancient residences of Ming and Qing Dynasties in China currently. Comparable with the Yongding Tulou and Meizhou Weilongwu (closed building, like Tulou but in different appearance), it is the classical work of the architectural culture of Hakka people.

There is a 1000-meter ancient street along the center line of the Picturesque Village, across the whole village. Along both sides of the street, there are ancient ancestral temples, residences and shops, where is the main market of Peitian. According to legend, there were dozens of various shops along the street, including inn, sedan leasing firm, gamble place, cloth shop, etc. At the 1000-meter ancient street, the sculpture and wooden painting of the corbel bracket inside the ancestral temples are splendid, with clear line and vivid figures.

Idyllic scenery: in early autumn, there are endless yellow and green rice fields. The rustle of the rice wave in the breeze echoes across the field like the thunder from the distant sky.

Professor Li Qiuxiang from Department of Architecture in Tsinghua University made a subject study on it with his students for nearly one month; a Doctor in Architecture from France investigated it for three times personally and wanted to stay longer each time. Peitian people have an elegant hobby of planting orchid. No matter how big the house is, they always build a pavilion at the center of the main courtyard and plant orchid in it.

Changting Ancient City:

Changting was called Tingzhou in ancient time. The seat of Tingzhou Prefecture was moved for twice and was moved to current seat at the third time. It is the fifth largest county of Fujian Province, located at the upstream of Tingjiang River in the west Fujian. After the establishment of county in the Han Dynasty, it was always the administrative seat of state, district and prefecture from the flourishing Tang Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty. It is also the settlement and birthplace of Hakka people, with the title of “Hakka Hometown” and “Capital of Hakka”.

Attractions: Rewi Alley, a writer from New Zealand, once said: “the most beautiful two mountain cities in China are Fenghuang in Hunan and Changting in Fujian.” With profound historical culture, it also has unique tourism resources, i.e., Hakka culture and ancient site. In 1994, it was listed in the third batch of National Famous Historical and Cultural Cities by the State Council.

Ancient Street and Confucian Temple: the ancient city wall is the external packing of Tingzhou Ancient City, which encloses the City God Temple, Confucian Temple, Thean Hou Temple[] and other ancient buildings of Tingzhou together, forming rich and intensive human landscape. The weathering ancient stone carving, mottled red wall and lingering incense in Confucian Temple, the old craftsman absorbed in making steelyard on the ancient street and the Zhang Stithy closed every afternoon are telling the ancient story of the Hakka city in Fujian mountain areas.
