The “Peach Garden” conceived by Tao Yuanming is a plain place with nature, tranquility and mystery. The Zhuguan Village at Wan’an Town of Xinluo District in Longyan City seems like such a fairyland and also is a bright pearl from a remote mountain. Located at the intermountain hills and basins of Longyan, it is a historically and culturally famous village at the provincial level, and was also listed in the second group of Chinese Traditional Village by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and Ministry of Culture in 2015. Time slows down and the soul of people will calm down and finally enters into tranquility here.
The small village includes many ancient relics, such as Langmen Jinsuo Bridge, Jiling Palace, Kuan Yin Temple, Guandi Temple and ancient trees reaching the sky, water flowing beneath a little bridge at the entrance of the village.
The beauty of the Zhuguan Village also lies in her natural and dynamic features. A very clear brook surrounding her nourishes clusters of wild flowers and green trees. We not only felt the mystery created by nature, but also got touched by its complete conservation when touring this scenery.
The beauty of the Zhuguan Village: a long and uninterrupted historical charm
In light of history, the Zhuguan Village was ever a post station at Wan’an community and a vital communication road stretching from Longyan County to Yong’an and the middle district of Fujian Province. As a former place producing paper, it also produced many local specialties such as rosin, tea, medicinal materials, etc., which were transported by land and sent out of mountains by water in a continuous way, bringing huge incomes to the Zhuguan Village. Along both sides along the river course, the tens of two-storey ancient residence houses with earth and wood structures were built at that period.
To receive merchants going to and fro, villagers built a long street with about 1200m in length at both sides along the river and set up two mansions for merchants to have a rest near the village office. 6 neighbored alleys were also constructed near the mansions.
However, with the change of times, the ever glorious and boisterous village lost the prosperity of her day. However, with its classic buildings, the Zhuguan Village can also exhibit its historical charm and elegance.
Jingling Palace is the oldest architecture in the Zhuguan Village in a bottle gourd’s pyramidal roof with its gable and hip double eaves, and is well conserved through the ages; the ancient lounge bridge, called as Baoding Bridge, is intended to protect treasures from out flowing and therefore also called as Langmen Jinsuo Bridge; standing erectly near the field at the gate of the village is a chastity arch for a wife to keep virtue and honor husband’s parent. The chastity arch was erected for a deceased Confucian scholar Zeng to confer honors and is the most complete ancient chastity arch in Xin Luo District of Longyan, which was established in the 16th year of the reign of Jiaqing Emperor in the Qing Dynasty (in 1811). When visitors tour around Jingling Palace, they feel traveling through times. This mysterious and glorious history connected by the village also flows like a brook in an endless way.
“Air-dried duck” made by every family in the winter solstice, will be air-cured lining on the bamboo pole at this best season of frosty times. A crystal brook lays and flows across the village and sounds of crowing cocks and barking dogs at both banks can be heard around. In the warm sunshine in winter, time slows down!
